The US presidential election this year is promising to be one of the most hyped and watched events around the world.
Aside from the choice to be made by Americans about who will spearhead the country for the next four years, it is also a drastic change of the direction of key policies that are likely to have a profound impact on American life. Next to it stands the potential global impact that the new president will certainly have.
When Is the Election Scheduled?
The approaching election of a new US president this year takes place on November 5. The winner will start serving a four-year term in the White House in January 2025. The president is empowered to make important and vital decisions, especially related to the foreign policy, he still works with the Congress, which needs to give approval for new proposed laws on taxes, climate change, immigration and other issues.
Still, when it comes to foreign affairs and representing the US on the international arena, the president can make decisions here without the approval of Congress.
2024 Presidential Candidates
In the US, there are two main political parties that dominate the process of elections: Republicans and Democrats. Election candidates from them are nominated through a series of state-by-state votes which are known as primaries and caucuses. The winners of these votes will represent the parties at the general election.
This year, Republicans have nominated the former president Donald Trump who has made a major comeback into politics after losing the election to Joe Biden in 2020. Trump managed to beat his rival during the primaries. Trump chose JD Vance, a 40-year-old senator from Ohio, as his vice-presidential running mate, which stresses Trump’s appeal to conservative type of voters.
On the Democratic side, there has been an unexpected and surprising twist. President Joe Biden suddenly stepped out of the presidential race, and his place was quickly taken by Kamala Harris, who was quick to secure her nomination from the Democratic party. Her running mate who aims to win the Vice-President position is the governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, who is 60.
While there are only two key candidates, there are also independent ones who also sometimes take part in the election. However, they are seldom lucky enough to make a serious bid for the presidential chair. This year, one of such independent candidates who set the US voting community abuzz was Robert F. Kennedy Jr, the nephew of the legendary president John F. Kennedy. At the end of August, though, he suspended his campaign and began supporting Trump, urging those who had voted for him to do likewise.
Key Difference between Democrats and Republicans
Here it might be a good idea to go deep into the major differences between the two main US political parties and elaborate what each of them is fighting for in the government. Democrats show liberal stances on multiple issues. They typically stand for civil rights, push for strong social security and fight with climate change. They also struggle to improve healthcare and access to it, they protect reproductive rights and strive to pass strict laws that control personal ownership of weapons.
Over the past few years, they have also been protecting racial justice and the increased migration into the US as was seen by Biden’s recent actions to allow thousands of immigrants in and empower them with voting rights. Kamala Harris is standing ground for similar steps, insisting on bringing more immigrants to the country. Many opponents believe that she is taking this issue too far now. Some fear that if she wins, America will totally become a communist-like country.
As for Republicans, this party is known for its conservative decisions and values. For this, they are often referred to as the GOP (Grand Old Party). They advocate for smaller government, smaller taxing, and more freedoms for businesses. They support gun rights of the population strongly and would be happy to radically reduce the incoming flow of immigrants into the country. They insist that women must be legally discouraged from doing abortions, and stand for religious freedom.
It is important to note that the tech entrepreneur and famous billionaire Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, is a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, endorsing him in his X and making public speeches to support them. Musk clearly stands for cutting down illegal immigration and supporting legal one, as often said on X.
Meanwhile, many Hollywood stars, horror legend Stephen King support Kamala Harris. As for the crypto industry, many big-name Bitcoiners say they are going to vote for Trump, while the co-founder of the Ripple blockchain giant Chris Larsen has made a generous donation to Kamala Harris’s campaign. As for Elon Musk, he has given generous financial support to Trump’s campaign.
How US Election Works
In the US election, the candidates need to get the majority of votes across the country. Each of the 50 states is assigned with a certain number of electoral votes, depending on the size of its population.
There are 538 electoral votes in total (that’s based on the number of the state’s representatives in Congress). They are also known as Electoral College votes. In order to win, a successful candidate has to win at least 270 electoral votes. Most citizens in the US at the age of 18 are eligible to vote. However, voting rules vary from one state to another. In every state voter registration is required, except North Dakota. Notably, each of the 50 states has its own voter registration process and deadline.
Congress Elections in November
Aside from the president, American citizens will also participate in the Congress voting this November. Congress consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. In the upcoming election, there will be 435 seats in the House of Representatives for voting and 34 seats in the Senate.
Currently, Republicans control the House and hence they have the power to initiate spending plans. Democrats are holding control of the Senate at the moment and are largely responsible for confirming government appointments, as well as other important duties.
The healthy balance within the Congress is crucial since it can either provide the necessary support to the president’s agenda or lay a veto on it.
Election Outcome Announcement
While the election will be held on November 5, the outcome may not be announced immediately. It may take several days to count all the cast votes. This was what happened in 2020 because of the increase in mail-in ballots due to the Covid pandemic. As a rule, the outcome becomes known on election night and news is spread around the country.
